THE REASON FOR THE SEASON
It was my plan to write a special article for this Christmas week, which I was going to title JOY TO THE WORLD. I was watching out for the time to tackle it, and when it didn’t come the way I expected and time was running out, I forced myself into the work. I started to type, expecting the inspiration to hit and carry me on, but I just didn’t seem able to strike the right chord. My delay and inability to tackle the work were apparently due to the “issues of life” I had been swamped with in the last few weeks, and so I eventually accepted my limitations and gave up the struggle, which I was evidently loosing. I decided to let my last article run for another week. I put a note on this blog to that effect and was going to follow it up with a status update on Facebook.
As it turned out, it was right there on Facebook that I found what might be the providential hurdle over the block I had come up against. One of my Christians friends, Ron Millevo, had posted a status in which he shared a poem of sorts about Christmas. It’s quite simple, but very interesting, really enlightening and definitely challenging. So I decided to devote the week to it and share it with you. Amazingly, the moment I made the decision, I found the writing rhythm and enthusiasm I had lost in the last week and got down to preparing this. In fact this has been my fastest draft to publishing experience on this blog. So maybe there’s more to my recent experience and this than I might have thought.
Knowing a bit about Ron, I do not think his piece was intended merely to entertain. Although he uses beautiful prose, he’s conveying a truth he is very passionate about. His original title is JESUS IS BETTER THAN SANTA, but the pacifist I am, I have introduced it to you as THE REASON FOR THE SEASON, inspired by his closing phrase.
So, Ron, the floor’s yours:
JESUS IS BETTER THAN SANTA
Santa lives at the North Pole.... JESUS is everywhere and is omnipresent.
Santa rides in a sleigh... JESUS rides on the cloud and walks on the water.
Santa comes but once a year... JESUS is an ever present help.
Santa fills your stockings with goodies... JESUS supplies all your needs.
Santa comes down your chimney uninvited... JESUS stands at your door and knocks.. and then enters your heart to live there.
You have to stand in line to see Santa... JESUS is as close as the mention of His name.
Santa lets you sit on his lap... JESUS lets you rest in His arms.
Santa doesn't know your name, all he can say is "Hi little boy or girl, What's your name?" JESUS knew our name before we ever did. Not only does He know our name, He knows our address, too. He knows our history and future and He even knows how many hairs are on our heads.
Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly... JESUS has a heart full of love.
All Santa can offer is HO HO HO... JESUS offers health, help and hope.
Santa says "You better not cry.." JESUS says "Cast all your cares on me for I care for you.
Santa's little helpers make toys... JESUS makes new life, mends wounded hearts, repairs broken homes and builds mansions.
Santa may make you chuckle... but JESUS gives you joy that is your strength.
While Santa puts gifts under your tree... JESUS became our gift and died on the tree. It's obvious there is really no comparison. We need to remember WHO Christmas is all about. We need to put Christ back in Christmas. Jesus is still the reason for the season.

The least I could say is a resounding “Amen!” Let’s keep “The Reason for the Season” ever before us: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrew 12:2.). Doing this is most imperative and the rewards are enormous! Remember, “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:9-10).
So keep the faith, and remain posted. Compliments of the season and the best of the coming year to you all. God bless you always.
In the King’s Service,
David Olagoke Olawoyin.
